History of Soap Box in TiMOru

Race you for it?

We aimed to organise an event that brought back childhood nostalgia, got men in sheds using their Kiwi ingenuity and sparked their DIY talents. Our goal was to get men talking, bringing attention to men’s health, whilst building the fastest kick ass Soap Box Carts!!!

2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022 and 2023!

Beyond our expectations!!! The event has drawn so many AMOZING people together!

Enthusiastic groups of work mates, families and friends came together to build soapbox carts to race.

Volunteers generously donated their time to help the day run smoothly.

Local businesses and super hero individuals kindly donated funding and equipment to make this ‘dream’ event a reality.

The original reason for fundraising was for Movember NZ, whose causes are close to all of our hearts. We brought awareness to men’s health, testicular & prostate cancer and especially mental health. Some of us have fathers, grandfathers, brothers, husbands, friends, neighbours or colleagues who may need help. We all made ‘new best friends’ and got Timoru talking!!

2020 was a year with an unknown future, we decided the $$ should stay here in South Canterbury and with a local charity that can support families and individuals, as well as our community.

Victoria Trust - Founded in 1996 to provide accommodation support for men & women with mental health issues. This provides them with the opportunity to live independently, however with support from health care professionals & home maintenance with the goal to help them get back on their feet. Some people require long term support.

Lions Bike Skills Park - The Timoru Soap Box Derby is very grateful to the Suburban Lions for their support as Road Marshall volunteers. We encourage you to visit Caroline Bay and see the AMOZING Bike Skills Park.

2022 - We had a new name Alpine Energy Soap Box Derby! Alpine Energy have helped us make sure this event continues by sponsoring the running costs of the event - All Of It!! So we can concentrate on running the event the best we can.

2023 - New Course! Yes you asked for it and 2023 will see the course be taken back down the original soap box course from the 1980’s/90’s. Starting at the Theratre Royal and finishing at the intersection with George St. This course will be faster, longer and provide much more challenges for our teams!

2024 - Round 2 of the new course and we are bring on a larger Team to help.

Get your crew ready & let’s do it again!!
